The GUPS was officially founded in Cairo in 1959, though it had an unofficial presence amongst Palestinians since the 1920s.

Indeed from 1952- 56 Yasser Arafat was its President whilst studying engineering at Cairo University.

Other distinguished GUPS leaders included the politicians Hanan Ashrawi and Faisal Husseini and the celebrated historian, Walid Khalidi.

The GUPS is currently a member of the Socialist Non-Government Organisation, World Federation of Democratic Youth.
