Contains much useful information and sumptuous photographs for the novice or the veteran traveller. Ms. Lee’s book has one flaw, it had the misfortune to be published in May 2011, two months after the Syrian Civil War began, so her useful information on travelling to Syria on daytrips is somewhat redundant for the time being.

That minor flaw to one side, she has a clear understanding of Lebanon and the different cultures, political and religious beliefs that you will encounter there, and how to navigate your way around the country with ease and diplomacy.

The New Zealand born author also has the bravery in many respects to go against the grain of popular Western opinion in her description of Hezbollah and their place in Lebanese society.

She is also not afraid to highlight some negative aspects of the country such as the rise of bag-snatching in central Beirut in recent years.

Ending on a positive note, this guide gives you everything you need to know about the cultural and historical sites worthy of visit, which restaurants and bars to use, and more importantly how much it will cost.

Overall this is essential reading for anyone wishing to travel to the great nation that is Lebanon.
